Bethlehem City Council Unanimously Passes Civil Rights Ordinance
By centralvoice
Following a three hour public meeting last night (June 21, 2011) Bethlehem City Council unanimously passed a non-discrimination ordinance. The next step is for Mayor John Callahan, who introduced the measure, to sign the ordinance.
Adrian Shanker, who led a coalition effort to pass the ordinance, is vice president of Pennsylvania Diversity Network. The coalition represented more than 100 business, faith, labor, arts, education, and civil rights organizations in support of the ordinance.
“We won tonight, but there were no real losers,” stated Shanker. “The Bethlehem community was loud and clear that they want civil rights protections, and city council tonight listened and voted accordingly.” Shanker said, “This law helps working people, it helps small business, it protects religious freedom, and most importantly, it makes discrimination illegal in the City of Bethlehem.”

Tell Congress: Don't discriminate against our families- work to create jobs instead
The Obama Administration announced last week that it was not going to defend the so-called “Defense of Marriage Act” (DOMA) in court. They correctly decided that it is unconstitutional and will no longer use taxpayer money to support discriminatory laws.
DOMA denies gay couples who are legally married the benefits and protections they need to take care of their families. It prevents parents from being able to leave work to care for their spouse's children when they get sick, and denies benefits to a surviving spouse - including ones they've already paid for like Social Security.
We applaud the Obama Administration for recognizing that discrimination is unconstitutional.
But now, Speaker John Boehner has vowed to use the resources of the House of Representatives to keep DOMA in place.
Instead of creating jobs, politicians now want to spend our taxpayer dollars attacking families. All married couples should be able to get the legal protections they need to be responsible for and take care of one another.
Send a message to Congress: Stop supporting discrimination and work to create jobs for our families.

Equality Pennsylvania and the Human Rights Campaign Partner in Fight for Equality
New partnership to focus on employment protections and working with communities of faith
HARRISBURG - Equality Pennsylvania (EQPA) - the LGBT advocacy organization for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania - and The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) - the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization - have formed a partnership to secure equality in the Keystone State. The new partnership, which includes a joint staff member, will focus on securing support to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) at the federal level and statewide non-discrimination legislation, as well as improving relationships between the LGBT community and various communities of faith.
"We are extremely excited to join Equality Pennsylvania in their great work for fairness," said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. "EQPA clearly knows its mission and has recently undergone significant changes aimed at making it a truly effective state LGBT civil rights organization. We recognize the importance of those changes and we look forward to working with them to make equality a reality in Pennsylvania."
With an eye on the upcoming elections, HRC and EQPA will target six congressional districts, over 50 state house districts, and 25 state senate districts to gain support for employment protections and to elect fair-minded candidates. Special attention will be paid to the faith community to gain support for passing non-discrimination legislation at the federal and state levels.
"Equality Pennsylvania has been working very hard over the past several months to improve our effectiveness and sharpen our message," explained EQPA board president, Brian Sims. "Our goal remains to represent all of the state's LGBT community in finding better avenues to equality, and we knew from the beginning that this partnership was a perfect way to help us meet the many challenges the organization and our citizens face all the time."
The organizations will be sharing the staff work of Allyson Diane Hamm. As the Statewide Organizer, Hamm brings years of organizing experience to the job. Currently the vice-chair of the Allentown Human Relations Commissions, she is also vice president of Interweave, the LGBT organization of the Unitarian Universalist Church. Hamm is also the former president of PRIDE of the Greater Lehigh Valley and worked as a special project and regional coordinator for PA-GALA (Pennsylvania Gay and Lesbian Alliance). She has campaign experience and has been active in the LGBT community for over a decade.
Hamm's responsibilities will include outreach to groups located throughout Pennsylvania that could be helpful in the efforts to pass non-discrimination legislation on both a state and federal level. Her job will also involve special attention being paid to faith community outreach in the hopes of generating improved support for passing non-discrimination legislation within that large constituency. Hamm will also assist in efforts to educate the LGBT community on the upcoming election as well. She will be based in the Lehigh Valley.
This is one of EQPA's first partnerships with a national LGBT civil rights organization and one of HRC's most in-depth partnerships with a state equality organization.Wednesday, September 8, 2010
"Bible believer" in Coudersport, PA promotes violence against trasgender people
Diane Gramley sat peacefully behind Robert Wagner in the Coudersport Public Library as the retired physician shared his views on transgender individuals with the assembled audience. “I'm gonna put a ball bat in my car,” he said, “and if I ever see a guy [Wagner refuses to use proper pronouns] coming out of a bathroom that my granddaughter's in, I'm gonna use the ball bat on him.” Moments later he added: “In the good old days, before 'she-males' existed, they just called such people perverts.”

WE WON! 75,000 emails in 24 hours convince Sen. Committee to kill anti-marriage equality bill
Thanks to you and your hard work the Pennsylvania State Senate Judiciary Committee just voted 8-6 to table SB 707! SB 707 is the bill to amend the PA Constitution to ban same sex marriage. This is a huge victory for us, since the vote effectively kills the bill.
This is your victory. We had over 120,000 emails sent to senators, over 75,000 in the last 24 hours! In addition, our allies and friends generated thousands more phone calls, emails and letters.
We should celebrate, but we need to remain vigilant. It is unlikely, but it is possible that the bill could come to life again. Especially if they think we aren't going to act again.
Please encourage your friends and family to join us at www.keystoneprogress.org
Also, help us maintain our network with your financial contribution. Any amount can help. You can donate at http://www.keystoneprogress.org/page/contribute/kspdonate
Congratulations on your incredible victory.

Stop PA from banning same sex marriage
The PA State Senate’s Judiciary Committee is voting on Tuesday to take away your rights! Anti-LGBT legislators plan to vote to put a ban on same sex marriage in the PA Constitution. If they succeed, it could take a generation before we LGBT people can have a chance to marry in Pennsylvania.
We can’t let this happen! Click here to send an email to all members of the Judiciary Committee NOW!
Anti-LGBT Senator John Eichelberger, who last year made headlines for saying that he is “allowing them (LGBT couples) to exist,” is the leader of this effort to put discrimination into the PA Constitution. If he wins, it will send a message throughout PA and across the nation that bigotry is acceptable and legal.
Take action now! Email the Judiciary Committee this simple message: “Vote NO on SB 707. Don't put bigotry in the PA Constitution.”
Then send this to everyone you know RIGHT NOW! We need thousands of emails TODAY to stop this bill.

Brethren-Mennonite church group condemns Sen. Eichelberger’s “assault upon gay and lesbian people.”
Brethren-Mennonite church group condemns Sen. Eichelberger’s “assault upon gay and lesbian people.”
Statement by Brethren Mennonite Council for LGBT Interests says he
“brings shame to himself and to the Church of the Brethren.”
(HARRISBURG, PA)—In a strongly worded statement, a church-based lesbian and gay advocacy group has condemned Senator John Eichelberger’s recent remarks as bringing “shame to himself and to the Church of the Brethren.”
The Brethren Mennonite Council for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Interests (BMC) issued their statement in response to the growing controversy around Eichelberger’s comments calling LGBT people “dysfunctional” and saying of same-sex couples that “we are allowing them to exist.”
Last week, activists presented Eichelberger a petition with 5,000 names asking for an apology. He refused, saying, “You know where I stand.”
Senator Eichelberger’s state-funded website (http://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/home/member_information/senate_bio.cfm?districtnumber=30) says that he is a member of First Church of the Brethren. BMC is the LGBT caucus for his denomination, the Church of the Brethren, which prompted their condemnation of Eichelberger. Their website (www.bmclgbt.org) says, “The mission of BMC is to cultivate an inclusive church and society and to care for the Mennonite and Brethren lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and allied community.”
Carol Wise, executive director of BMC, is a former Pennsylvania resident, now based in Minnesota. She called on Sen. Eichelberger “to educate himself and cease his assault upon gay and lesbian people. His uninformed and callous remarks do little to promote understanding and serve only to foster an atmosphere of fear that gives rise to acts of violence and discrimination. Our families, and all families, deserve better.”
The entire statement from BMC is attached.

Statement in Response to Senator Eichelberger
July 2009
Senator Eichelberger brings shame to himself and to the Church of the Brethren, his religious affiliation, through his ill-informed and disrespectful comments about gay and lesbian individuals and families. In addition to significant misinformation about the realities of gay and lesbian relationships, it appears that the Senator’s imagination and fantasy life have gone into overdrive as he anticipates polygamy and child marriage emerging from same sex marriage. Indeed, we would gently remind him that such practices are most generally advocated in cultures that are quite punitive of same sex relationships, not affirming of them.
Senator Eichelberger comes from a Christian denomination that, while not supportive of marriage equality, specifically calls upon its members to “challenge openly the widespread fear, hatred and harassment of homosexual persons” as well as “advocate the right to jobs, housing and legal justice.” It is disheartening to hear his disregard of such directives by calling gay and lesbian relationships “dysfunctional;” by his casual dismissal of the needs of the children of lesbian and gay couples; and especially by his disturbing comment that gay and lesbian people are “allowed to exist,” as though our very lives depend upon his generosity.
We urge Mr. Eichelberger to educate himself and cease his assault upon gay and lesbian people. His uninformed and callous remarks do little to promote understanding and serve only to foster an atmosphere of fear that gives rise to acts of violence and discrimination. Our families, and all families, deserve better.

Rep. Frankel says Eichelberger is a reason we need non-discrimination law
HARRISBURG, July 2 - State Rep. Dan Frankel, D-Allegheny, issued the following statement on Wednesday evening's passage of the Allegheny County Human Relations Act:
"I applaud the members of the Allegheny County Council who voted in favor of the non-discrimination ordinance. This ordinance will make the law more fair and just in Allegheny County and make us more competitive for attracting and retaining jobs. This vote -- in Pennsylvania's second most populated county -- will also help advance similar statewide legislation in Harrisburg.
"Recent comments by state Senator John Eichelberger highlight why this ordinance is necessary. The senator said, in a public debate, that we 'allow [same-sex couples] to exist,' as if that were all our fellow citizens should expect.
"This kind of basic lack of respect for hundreds of thousands of his fellow citizens also jeopardizes economic development for our state. I'm reminded of the Oklahoma state legislator who cost her state 1,000 jobs when she made anti-gay comments last year.
"I'm delighted that residents of Allegheny County will now be protected from discrimination but am still concerned that many Pennsylvanians lack this basic protection, even while most residents believe it should be the law. Look at the 71 percent support statewide - including 63 percent support in the central/'T' region -- for House Bill 300, which would protect people who live or work in Pennsylvania from discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity or expression."

Eichelberger still can't apologize. Still blaming us for his words.
More local coverage of Senator John Eichelberger on Altoona’s right-wing talk radio. He's still blaming Keystone Progress, instead of taking responsibility for his words.

Eilchelberger makes statement, of a sort
Senator Eichelberger has finally made a statement about his outrageous comments concerning LGBT people. Did he apologize for calling lesbians and gays “dysfunctional?” No.
Did he admit that he was wrong for saying of same-sex couples that “we are allowing them to exist?” No.
Instead, he blamed us for pointing out the truth. Here’s his statement to WJAC-TV: "This group [Keystone Progress] is a politically active group that goes around the country targeting people that are involved in this issue. If this is an example of how they conduct themselves then it's difficult to continue dialogue and discussion, if people intentionally misportray the truth."

Stop Legal Discrimination in PA
Stop Legal Discrimination in Pennsylvania
The bad news:
There is no Pennsylvania law preventing discrimination in employment, housing or accommodations because of a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. If you are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered, you can be fired from your job, refused service, or denied housing without any recourse under PA law.
The good news:
Pennsylvania took the first step today toward making that discrimination illegal.
HB 300, legislation prohibiting discrimination on the bases of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression in housing, employment, and public accommodations passed the State Government Committee in the PA House of Representatives today. Current Pennsylvania law provides basic legal protection against discrimination on the bases of race, color, religion, ancestry, age, national origin, handicap or disability, education and the use of a guide dog. HB 300 offers the same anti-discrimination protections to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people that are offered to other Pennsylvanians.
The work before us:
Governor Rendell has promised to sign anti-discrimination legislation if it reaches his desk, and a majority of the Senate and House will vote to pass it. We just need to get leadership to schedule a vote.
That’s where you come in. Take a moment to sign our e-petition to House and Senate Leadership asking them to schedule votes on this vital legislation as soon as possible.
Click here to take action, then forward this action to everyone you know. http://www.keystoneprogress.org/page/s/paantidiscr1
